To address this, the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) undertook a large-scale scientific remediation initiative, transforming the site into a sustainable waste processing ecosystem.Through systematic excavation, segregation and processing, over 10 lakh metric tons of legacy waste was treated, resulting in the reclamation of nearly 55 acres of land. The remediated site has been converted into an integrated Municipal Solid Waste Processing Facility equipped with Material Recovery Facilities (MRFs), composting units, RDF generation systems, leachate treatment infrastructure, SCADA monitoring, CCTV surveillance, trommels, ballistic separators, and dust control systems. The initiative has significantly reduced landfill dependency, improved environmental quality, and strengthened circular economy practices through scientific segregation, recycling and resource recovery. Today, Bhandewadi stands as a model of how scientific planning and technological innovation can transform legacy waste sites into sustainable urban infrastructure.Bhandewadi%u2019s Urban Facelift: Turning Legacy Waste into OpportunitySBM-U Archives - 19th May 2026Dainik Tribune - 19th June 2023PAGE 6 TUESDAY, 9 JUNE, 2026
