Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA) has partnered with Google to allow all citizens to locate community/ public toilets in their cities on Google Maps and provide feedback. As on date, more than 2300+ cities having more than 57,000+ toilets are live on Google Maps with the name of “SBM Toilet”.
Ministry realized that lot of citizens did not have any mechanism to locate and access public toilets. Therefore, instead of developing any separate Mobile app to locate toilets which citizens were unlikely to use, MoHUA partnered with Google to locate all public toilets on Google Maps.
The initiative started with a pilot in five cities of NCR and two cities of Madhya Pradesh which was later scaled up. Today, citizens can not only search public toilets on Google Maps but are also encouraged to rate and review them thus contributing to their cleanliness and maintenance.
